The Pyrohoshcha Dormition of the Mother of God (Pyrogoshcha) Church is a Christian church in Kyiv, the Orthodox cathedral of the city of the Middle Ages. Built in the 12th century, it was the first church in Kyiv constructed entirely of brick without stone. Its walls were adorned with frescoes, and the floor was decorated with mosaics. Now it is a modern (1997-1998) reproduction of the original ancient building of the 12th century, located at the foot of Zamkova Hill on Kontraktova Square. The church was restored in the late 1990s following Ukraine's declaration of independence, reconstructed to its original state. Today, it serves as an important architectural and spiritual symbol of Kyiv, attracting both pilgrims and tourists.
