Sanctuary-observatory

The largest sanctuary found on the island of Khortytsia consists of objects with astrological purpose. During archaeological excavations in 1993, a sanctuary-observatory was discovered, dated to the 2nd millennium BC.

The sanctuary consists of two circles - a large Solar and a small Lunar. Unlike Stonehenge, there is no avenue between the circles of this sanctuary. According to researchers, it could have been dismantled for unknown reasons. The cult structure is located at a height of 31 meters above the level of the Dnipro River. All constructions are made of plates of local gray granite, with most of them having large and medium sizes.

Ancient people used the sanctuary for astronomical observations related to celestial bodies, and there may also be a connection with fertility cults.
