Kontraktova Square is one of the oldest squares in Kyiv, with its origins tracing back to the times of Kyivan Rus. After the Mongol-Tatar invasion destroyed the Upper City, the center of Kyiv shifted to Podil, making Kontraktova Square a focal point. The name "Kontraktova" comes from the fact that merchants in Kyiv would conclude contracts on this square. Since the late 18th century, it has hosted annual international contract fairs, primarily because of its proximity to the Kyiv port, which was the main hub for export and import activities. On the square, you can find several notable landmarks, including the Church of the Virgin Pyrohoshcha, which dates back to the 12th century; the Samson Fountain, a symbol of Podil; the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, an architectural monument; the historic Gostynnyi Dvir building; and monuments dedicated to Petro Sahaidachny and Hryhorii Skovoroda. In December 2017, a Ferris wheel, approximately 45 meters tall, was installed on the square, offering panoramic views of Podil and its historic surroundings. Since August 2017, Podil, including Kontraktova Square, has become a pedestrian zone, hosting various cultural events such as concerts, festivals, exhibitions, and performances. Kontraktova Square is a place where visitors can appreciate stunning architecture and experience the unique spirit of Podil.
